Every planting season, most farmers reach for DAP fertilizer first. It’s a trusted product that helps young crops establish strong roots. But while DAP fertilizer is one of the best tools for starting off a farm, how you use it determines whether you’ll get the full benefit or waste your money.
DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) is rich in phosphorus and nitrogen, two key nutrients crops need right after planting. Phosphorus helps root development, while nitrogen supports leaf and stem growth. But the secret lies in the application method, timing, and spacing.
Start by applying DAP fertilizer in the planting hole, but not directly in contact with the seed. When fertilizer touches the seed, the salts can burn it, leading to poor germination. The best practice is to place the fertilizer about 3–5 cm below or beside the seed.
For example, if you’re planting maize, use about 50 kg of DAP fertilizer per acre, depending on your soil fertility. Mix it lightly with soil before placing the seed.
Many Kenyan farmers make the mistake of adding “a little more” thinking it will boost yields faster. Unfortunately, too much DAP fertilizer can actually lock out other nutrients like zinc, causing yellowing or stunted plants.
Once your crops have established roots, it’s important to supplement DAP fertilizer with a top dressing fertilizer like Calci Topper or a foliar feed from Seedpro Kenya to keep the crops growing healthy and balanced.
If your soil is acidic (common in central Kenya and western regions), DAP fertilizer can make it worse over time. Always consider liming your farm after a few seasons to restore pH balance.
When used correctly, DAP fertilizer gives crops a solid foundation stronger roots, faster growth, and uniform stands. That’s what every farmer wants to see in their field.
